I don’t know about you, but I can sit and read all day and until I actually sit down and work
with something I do not fully understand it. Throughout my college education I have taken v
arious classes relating to Information Technology. But until I began to work in the IT Helpdesk
of Time Warner Cable, I really wasn’t utilizing the concepts I was learning about and I definitely
did not understand them as well as I could have. Hands-on experience is key! I recommend an internship
for at least a year in the field you are interesting in. Internships are very beneficial.
An internship can either increase your experience in that particular area or it can show you that
maybe this really isn’t the field you want to work in upon graduation. As for me, I have found
what I want to do career wise. Upon graduation, I hope to join an established IT team in a
corporate environment. Most corporate companies offer an environment with good benefits. The
career that I seek is that of a network administrator. This network administration area is
where I want to begin but by no means where I want to end. My dreams are to one day move up the
ladder to the position of manager or even director. I love environments that are fast paced. One
has to be comfortable with a changing environment when working in the IT profession because
technology is constantly changing. I love learning new things and troubleshooting problems that arise.
I have a unending thirst for knowledge and I will continue to learn, read, and study for the rest
of my career and afterwards most likely.
In the year that I have worked in Time Warner’s helpdesk, I have been involved in various projects that allowed me to further my current knowledge and experience. I could not have asked for anything better. I thank Time Warner for allowing me to experience this opportunity and for allowing me to further my IT knowledge of the IT world.
Working in the Information Technology field is much more than just knowing computers and technology. I have used Business Communications skills every day in the helpdesk. In order to succeed in a corporate environment, you must have good communications skills as well as good work ethics. Just knowing how to do something is not enough in this day and time. One also needs to know how to plan and how to interact with others. On average, I communicate with ten users every day. Communication is very important! It’s important to make sure you understand the problem before you begin to troubleshoot it. Knowing the problem first saves a lot of time. I could go on and on about things I have learned and experience I have gained in my internship. It is truly a long list.
Again, I thank the University for giving me the knowledge that I needed to succeed in my internship and I thank Time Warner Cable for allowing me the opportunity to gain all the experience that I have gained.
